About 60 million people around the globe have been forced to leave their homes to escape war, violence and persecution. The majority have become Internally Displaced Persons, meaning they fled their homes but are still in their own countries. Others, referred to as refugees, sought shelter outside their own country. But what does that term really mean? Benedetta Berti, Ph.D. and Evelien Borgman explain.
Dr. Benedetta Berti is a foreign policy and security researcher, analyst, consultant, author and lecturer. Her work focuses on armed groups and internal wars, analyzing the impact of insecurity on civilians and studying how to build more peaceful and resilient communities.
Evelien Borgman is Training and Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’. She joined Clingendael in August 2014 and develops training programmes for diplomats and other international relations professionals, with a focus on international security and diplomacy
